We thank the leaders of the following organizations for allowing their employees to volunteer at Day of Caring-Project FreshStart: Border Region MHMR, City of Rio Grande, City of Roma - Police & Fire Departments & Administration, H-E-B, Medina Electric Co-Op, Inc., Rio Grande
City C.I.S.D., Roma I.S.D., Serving Children & Adolescents in Need (SCAN), Starr County, Starr County Victims of Domestic Violence Program, Starr County Sheriff's Office, Starr County District Attorney's Office, US Customs & Border Protection-Rio Grande City & Roma and Walmart.
On June 21, more than 100 employees
from local businesses, school districts
and government entities volunteered to
package school supplies for 900 freshmen
enrolled in Rio Grande City CISD
and Roma ISD. United Way's Project
FreshStart took place at Dr. Mario
Ramirez Elementary in Rio Grande
City. The event kicked off with United
Way Board Members and funded partner
agencies who delivered a Community
Impact Report.
In 2016, United Way supported direct
services in Starr County through 13 partner
agencies. These agencies have assisted
a total of 13,188 clients from Rio
Grande City and Roma alone. Services
offered include emergency assistance
and drug and alcohol abuse counseling.
Agencies also assist victims of domestic
violence and conduct forensic interviews
for children ages 2-17 who have
been neglected or physically/sexually
abused. United Way has also provided
and continues to offer direct services to
Starr County through its In Style Back
to School Shopping Spree and Day of
Caring, Project FreshStart.
